BBC Worldwide Takes Two of Its Most Popular Series to the Big Screen

An agreement with Cinemex will allow fans of Sherlock and Doctor Who to enjoy special episodes of both series at theaters in Mexico in May

Miami Florida – BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC and the main subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), announced an agreement today that allows Mexican fans of Sherlock and Doctor Who to enjoy special episodes of these hit shows in movie theaters during the month of May. Thanks to the agreement with Cinemex, one of the country’s leading theater chains, Whovians had the chance to watch Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song on the big screen last weekend, and on May 13-15 mystery lovers will be treated to Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.

“This agreement allows us to strengthen BBC Worldwide’s relationship with devotees of our most popular series while allowing us to continue expanding our reach through a wide variety of audience contact points, including digital platforms, movie theaters and retail stores,” explained Anna Gordon, Executive Vice President and General Manager, BBC Worldwide Latin America and US Hispanic.

Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song surprised Whovians with the return of River Song, who joined the Doctor for another adventure on Cinemex screens. The episode included a hefty dose of danger courtesy of her current husband, the evil android king Hydroflax, putting the protagonists of the acclaimed series in peril. River Song made her first appearance on Doctor Who in 2008 in the episode “Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead” and has joined the cast for 15 episodes to date.

This weekend, the 90-minute special Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will offer fans of the British detective one of the most complex and surprising mysteries he has ever faced: the story of a vengeful bride who is roaming London’s streets. But that’s not all; Sherlock followers will also enjoy special behind-the-scenes footage with the cast and film crew and an exclusive five-minute tour of Sherlock’s residence at 221 Baker Street with series creator Steven Moffat. The special will air in Mexico on May 13-15 in Cinemex theaters.
