Five Doctor Who stars will attend a special screening event celebrating the 20th anniversary of David Tennant’s first series of Doctor Who in London next month.
The event is part of wider Twenty Years of Tennant celebrations, which also include a dedicated BBC Three takeover night screening hours of Tennant‑era Doctor Who to mark two decades since his first full series aired.
Back in 2006, Mr Tennant’s first full run as the Doctor turned Saturday nights into event television, as families gathered around the TV for fresh adventures in time and space.
For many viewers now in their twenties and thirties, those episodes were watched as children peering out from behind sofas, as Daleks, Cybermen and other monsters became playground legends and part of shared national folklore.
The BFI celebration aims to tap into that mixture of nostalgia and ongoing fandom, offering the chance to see key Tenth Doctor stories on the cinema screen and hear more about how New Who reshaped the series for a new generation.
Two episodes, The Idiot’s Lantern and Doomsday, will be screened at the London event at BFI Southbank on Belvedere Road.
Idiot’s Lantern cast members Jamie Foreman and Debra Gillett, who played Eddie Connolly and Rita Connolly respectively, are attending the special event.
Doomsday actors Tracey Ann Oberman, Andrew Hayden-Smith, and Shaun Dingwall, who played Yvonne Hartman, Jake Simmonds and Pete Tyler respectively, will also be there.
Director Graeme Harper and costume designer Louise Page are the other special guests at the celebration of Doctor Who series two.
A statement from the BFI said:
“We follow last year’s Doctor Who regeneration event at BFI Southbank with pivotal moments from 20 years ago – the first full series featuring the tenth incarnation.
“We will screen a couple of episodes from the second series and talk about the continued impact the show has had over 62 years since it originally aired.”
Oxfordshire‑based Doctor Who fans can make the short trip over to London to take part, with fast rail links from Oxford, Banbury and Didcot putting BFI Southbank within easy reach for an afternoon or evening in the Whoniverse.
This event is produced in partnership with the Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS) and tickets are priced at £17, with concessions at £14 and members paying £2.50 less.
